We look at other sporting comebacks that are excellent Following Kim Clijsters declared her return to tennis in 2020.
Clijsters, who turned pro in 1997, has stepped twice retiring in 2007 due to injury problems.
Adhering to a two-year hiatus and the birth of her infant, Clijsters returned in 2009, relying on wildcards to recover her ranking. The US Open title she had first won in 2005 by beating Caroline Wozniacki in 2009 was swiftly reclaimed by the Belgian.
The year before incorporating an Australian Open success clijsters successfully defended the title 2010. Another retirement was announced in 2012, this time because of family commitments as Clijsters didn’t wish to carry on to trip while her daughter began school.
Clijsters has announced her return and started training in ancient 2019.
Clijsters isn’t the first celebrity to generate a sporting comeback…
Widely regarded as the NBA’s best player of all time, his sneakers in 1993 hung up to give a go to league baseball. But he returned two decades later to pick up where he left off. He led the Bulls to three straight titles between 1996 and 1998. His second comeback with the Washington Wizards in 2001 did not prove successful. Jordan played his final NBA game on April 16, 2003.
Jockey Piggott announced his retirement in 1985 having ridden over 4,000 winners. The 11-time winner was detained for tax fraud, however, returned to racing in fashion in 1990 as he won the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Royal Academy. Piggott rode Rodrigo de Triano to victory.
Foreman became world heavyweight champion for the first time in 1973, quitting Joe Frazier in 2 rounds. After two successful title defences, Foreman dropped to Muhammad Ali in the struggle dubbed’The Rumble in the Jungle’ and failed to regain his belt before declaring his retirement in 1977. Fast forward to 1994 since he floored Michael Moorer in the 10th round and became the oldest champion in history.
Seles became the youngest girl to make it to the world No 1 position in 1991 and won eight Grand Slam singles titles before her 20th birthday. Yugoslavian-born Seles dominated the sport winning three with victories at the Open. Back in April 1993, Seles was stabbed by a deranged spectator while playing a tournament in Hamburg. She would not play again for a couple of years, although she recovered from her injuries. She returned in 1995, and the next year she won significant singles title and her 10th with a psychological victory in the Australian Open.
Formula One driver Lauda returned into racing 42 days after suffering burns in an accident in the German Grand Prix in 1976. Before retiring from the sport in 1979 he maintained a second domain in 1977 with Ferrari. Lauda returned with McLaren three years won his third race back and seized his world title. He passed away in the age of 70 this season.
When he won the 2019 Masters at 16, woods finished an 11-year wait for a major. Back in April 2017he told Jack Nicklaus”I’m done” through the Champions Dinner at Augusta National, and he flew straight into London to find the consultant who suggested that he undergo spinal fusion operation. And two years after his surgery, he was being fitted for another green jacket as him transferred to 15 important names – three behind Nicklaus.
