Paul Merson’s Chelsea verdict so far: No fear factor, but patience key

Paul Merson thinks Chelsea do not have the anxiety factor that they once had, however, says patience is critical beneath Frank Lampard.
Lampard has picked up five points dropping leads in both of the games.
Before throwing away a 2-0 lead against newly-promoted Sheffield United on Saturday they drew 1-1 with Leicester.
But using a transfer ban in place, Merson considers together with Chelsea fielding one of the average ages in their XIs this season, patience is crucial.
Chelsea were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United on the opening day of this season, but speaking on The Debate, Merson considers game direction in their two house draws has been worrying.
“I was frustrated with them in the last half an hour against Man Utd, I believed they threw in the towel and then drifted off.
“But it’s a difficult one; as a new manager that you would like to come out and entertain. I’m a Chelsea fan. He would bring a striker off and put on another midfield player if Mourinho was 2-0 up from Sheffield United. That was the end of the game along with the team understood that .
“The other groups do not understand that now. Chelsea haven’t got that fear variable anymore. Today, teams such as Leicester can remain in the game , and towards the end it looked like maybe Leicester would win it.”
Merson considers Lampard would be overachieving if he managed to sneak Chelsea into the top four this season, also says some of his squad’s inexperience, including the remarkable Mason Mount along with Tammy Abraham, if permit him more time.
“I like Frank, and I believe you get expertise as you go. Would someone have played Mason Mount? He’s a special player. And Tammy Abraham has four aims.
“We only do this by studying, you do not get five games down the road and say’You are from this team,’ if they are not doing. You return to square one just like this. Patience, patience. All these are children.
“Man City and Liverpool are far ahead of everyone now, this is a different situation. If Chelsea ended in the top four this season, Frank would get director of the year, in my estimation .”
Merson also appreciates that Lampard, as the Chelsea legend and manager, may feel inclined if his side are top to amuse the crowd. His guidance to Lampard is to’Do a Mourinho!” And take the points.
“Winning games is a hard thing to do when you’ve lost your best player, and among the greatest players in the world in Hazard. Frank is it up. In the moment, I think you don’t always have to entertain, although I think he will have patience. Do a Mourinho!
“You occasionally think in a job:’Oh, so I have to stay entertaining here, otherwise that the lovers are going to find the hump!” In the long run, you do not need to do that, you need to be clued up, take the three things.”
