Frankie Dettori has confessed that heshed a tear during the hours which followed Enables heartbreaking defeat at the Prix de lArc de Triomphe in ParisLongchamp weekend.
Waldgeist was a favorite to become the first horse to win the premier contest of Europe three times, but mowed on john Gosden mare – providing a triumph in the race to trainer Andre Fabre.
Having had a week to digest what occurred, Dettori spoke eloquently on the Opening Show of ITV Racing on Saturday afternoon – reflecting on both the aftermath and pre-race build-up.
Dettori said:It was great – as soon I stepped from the weighing area people were crying and going berserk. It was like being at the football, it was not horse racing.
The paddock was and I have about the filly and I was trying to take everything in – it was a unique moment.
The parade seemed to go on and on and when I got near the winning post they were not crying Permit any longer, they were shouting my name. I think the French were supporting her, although I never anticipated such heat from not only the people.
The race went just like I thought. I had a great place and the pace was strong. I was able to conserve ground and give my horse a breather and everything turned out fine until the Andre Fabre horse spoiled it in the past 100 metres!
Dettori continued:The race couldnt have gone better. I wish Magical had shot me into the race somewhat longer, but once Sottsass came I had to move.
Waldgeist quickened and that I did not, that is the gap. The only thing that made him go and my filly stop was the ground – Id have got to the lineup if the ground was good.
She really tried her heart out and we came near. I shed a tear on Sunday night, however, she moved down in glory, even in defeat.
Connections are expected to decide soon whether Enable will race or be retired from racing.
Dettori is obviously keeping his fingers crossed he has another chance to associate in Paris next year.
He explained:Obviously I had been deflated, but I had the other three races to ride , so I had to pick myself up and attempt to get it out of my head.
It has been an remarkable experience for all those involved and I only expect Prince Khalid retains her in training and we can try again next year!
